Google Alphabet is a multination conglomerate.
The company was founded in the year 2015. It is the parent company of Google and several other companies owned by them. The company is led by two founders of Google namely, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Alphabet has a large number of companies under it namely Google, GV, Verily, X. So, what are the plans of Alphabet and what is it up to?
1. The alphabet is planning to release the Google assistant for all the devices. Currently, the Google Assistant is only available on the Google Allo and their premier Nexus and pixel device.
2. The alphabet is also trying to provide the internet to a large number of people out there who do have the internet connectivity. Alphabet has also launched the project LinkNYC, a world’s largest free public Wi-Fi program.
3. Alphabet’s city development organisation Sidewalk labs are planning to release many new labs devoted to the housing at low cost, health care innovations, and modelling out the urban planning schemes.
4. The alphabet is trying to enter the transportation business. Google Waze is trying to launch the new transportation and car-pooling system.

These are many other projects like the energy related are about which very fewer people now. But you can be sure of one thing that is whatever Alphabet is going to do it’s going to draw the large attention toward itself as this company is known for giving large surprises to people
Relationship with Google?
Alphabet Inc is the parent company of Google and also owns all of its subsidiaries.
Here's a breakdown of all the business units (so far) that will be under Alphabet:
- Calico (Calico): A biotech R&D company established in 2013 with the mission to extend human life.
- Nest (Nest Store): A home automation company which was bought by Google in 2014 for $3.2 billion.
- Fiber (Google Fiber): Google's (now Alphabet's) foray into high-speed broadband Internet.
- Google X (Research at Google): A specialized R&D department dealing with ambitious projects (Project Loon, Project Glass, Project Wing, etc.)
- Google Capital (Google Capital - Google's Growth Equity Investment Fund): Google's (nowAlphabet's) investment unit focusing on late-stage growth companies.
- Google Ventures (Google Ventures): Google's (now Alphabet's) venture capital unit.
- Sidewalk Labs (Sidewalk Labs): A company focused on smart cities.
- Life Sciences: Focused on medicine and health issues (glucose-sensing contact lens)
- Google: Google proper will include Search, Ads, Maps, Apps, YouTube and Android.
Why Alphabet Inc?
Because the brand Google got stereotyped to just search and ads company while they're into much wider areas of technology and research.
They got programs related to curing cancer (a bracelet that can make all the cancer cells in your body move towards the bracelet), automating everything (cars just one of those things), Wi-Fi everywhere (Project Loon) and solving other "billion person problems".
A problem wasn't considered worthy unless it could solve a problem for a billion people.
So now Alphabet is aligning itself towards this strategy: a holding company that owns and invests in other companies that can solve billion person problems.
More than an organisational division, Alphabet Inc is divided up by mission.
In my opinion, even Facebook should follow this same branding approach if they want to dive in to other areas of business. The brand Facebook is now deeply associated to a social network and nothing more than that. There are rumours that Facebook is secretly building a mobile os competing Android. If thats true and if they call it Facebook Mobile, it would certainly not buy it.
How branding works?
Branding a business with a new name from its parent company has always worked. Here is one such example of global monopoly in sun glasses and spectacles business.

- Dolce & Gabbana
- DKNY
- Michael Kors
- Miu Miu
- Polo Ralph Lauren
- Paul Smith Spectacles
- Prada
- Ralph
- Ralph Lauren eyewear
- Tiffany & Co.

and the Italian company Luxottica owns all of them. It is the world's largest eyewear company, controlling over 85% of the world's major eyewear brands. Luxottica doesn't manufacture or sell products in its name, it is only a parent company that holds varied businesses, similar to Alphabet Inc.
abc.xyz
that's the domain of Alphabet Inc. abc.xyz encapsulates the English alphabet in its entirety. It's Google's, er, Alphabet's way of saying that it's an umbrella for everything it will do -- from 'a' to 'z'.

Google created Alphabet so that it could run all of its offshoot companies (Calico, Nest, Fiber, XLabs, etc.) without harming the core business. In the future, these companies will be held responsible for their bottom line (not Google) and the CEO will not get angry with Google for a bust this other company had. Now that was the main reason, here are a couple more reasons why Google created Alphabet:
- To better manage the company. As stated above, everything used to be under Google. Now Larry Page and Sergey Brin can better manage each section of the company.
- Better acquisitions. Now, if Alphabet decides to acquire another company, it will be another subsidiary of Alphabet and not part of Google. Then, their management doesn't have to change. It will be a lot like what Berkshire Hathaway does when it acquires companies.
- To appease shareholders. Now they can see just how Google is doing, not how Google and all of its other "to the moon" projects are doing.
- To retain Sundar Pichai. It is very likely that Sundar could have left Google if he didn't become CEO, and now he has a lot more power over the money maker in the business.
- To better support the "to the moon" campaigns. Now funds can be allocated better just for that particular company and not for this company and this company and this company
